Program for Exceptional Students

The Cook County Program for Exceptional Students believes in the dignity and worth of every individual, and in the right of every student to have the opportunity to develop intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally to their fullest potential. We will provide leadership, services, and support to strengthen the capacity of schools, families, and communities to ensure the success of all students through collaboration in the educational process.

PUBLIC NOTICE

CHILD FIND

Federal and State regulations require the Cook County School system to have in effect procedures for the identification, location, and evaluation of all students with disabilities, who reside in Cook County. These students may be preschool students, private school students, public school students, homeless/migrant students, charter school students, children served in community programs such as rehabilitation centers or day care centers, and/or home school students.

If a child residing in the Cook County School district who is suspected of having a disability but is not a student, the parent/guardian can contact the special education department at the Central Office for guidance. The process will be explained to the parent, some documentation will be requested and the child may be referred for an evaluation. After the evaluation is complete, an eligibility committee meets to review a wide array of data and determine if the child is a student with a disability based on Georgia Rules and Regulations. If the child qualifies for Special Education services and the parent/guardian consents to services, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed.

Cook County Schools Department of Special Education is seeking information from parents or others concerning anyone living in the Cook County School district, ages 3 to 21, who may have a disability that is not being addressed. If you know of such persons who may have an intellectual, physical, emotional or other disability, please contact Leslie McElrath, Director of Special Education, at 229-896-2296. All information received will be kept confidential.
